Grammatica Slavica:

grammar between tradition, innovation and future challenges

The Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures of the Faculty of Arts University of Maribor in collaboration with the Slavic Association Maribor invites you to participate in the 9th International Conference Slavic Scientific Reflections Grammatica Slavica: grammar between tradition, innovation and future challenges which will take place from 21 to 22 May 2026 at the Faculty of Arts in Maribor, Slovenia.

The conference, dedicated to grammar and grammar research and use in the Slavic linguistic area, is being organised on the occasion of two important anniversaries, namely the 100th anniversary of the birth of the renowned Slovenian grammarian Jože Toporišič (1926–2014) and the 50th anniversary of the publication of the first edition of his Slovene Grammar (1976), which has witnessed several subsequent editions and has been in use to the present day. Additionally, it is also an opportunity to mark the 50th anniversary of the Slavic Association Maribor which significantly contributes to connecting researchers of Slavic languages at the regional level.

The conference aims to highlight the importance and influence of grammars of Slavic languages and to evaluate the role of grammar in various historical periods and in the present day. We aim to explore various types of grammars and their prevalence in the Slavic region and analyse grammatical phenomena from both theoretical and applied perspectives. Our purpose is to define the place of grammar in the educational system, examine the methods of acquiring and assessing grammatical knowledge, and the way it is mastered by its users. We expect to bring together current insights into grammar research and use, including new grammatical approaches, and reflections on the role of grammar in the digital age, especially in times of rapid development of artificial intelligence. We are thus placing the comprehensive treatment of grammar and grammar research and use in the Slavic language area at the intersection of the past, present and future.
